Flopsy is Peter Rabbit, Mopsy and Cotton-Tail's Sister, Mrs. Josephine Rabbit's Daughter and Benjamin Bunny's Cousin, later wife, and mother of the Flopsy Bunnies.

Biography[]

In The Tale of Mr. Tod, Flopsy has married her cousin Benjamin, and the pair have seven children. Mr. Bouncer, her father-in-law, lives with them. Unfortunately, while Flopsy and Benjamin were out one day, Tommy Brock paid Mr. Bouncer a visit. After indulging in some of Flopsy’s cowslip wine and smoking with Brock, Mr. Bouncer fell asleep, leaving the badger free to abduct the young rabbits. Upon arriving home to find them gone, Benjamin set off to rescue them, leaving a distraught Flopsy at home with Mr. Bouncer.

Flopsy and her father-in-law had at least two arguments, and Flopsy relieved Mr. Bouncer of his pipe and hid the tobacco. She then set about an intensive cleaning of her burrow in order to work out her anxieties, much to the concern of Mr. Bouncer. Luckily, Benjamin and Peter return with the rescued children. The overjoyed Flopsy sees to her children and puts them to bed, before reconciling with Mr. Bouncer and settling in to hear the story of the rescue.

In The Flopsy Bunnies, Flopsy and Benjamin’s children (unless they’ve had another litter) number six, and are known as the Flopsy Bunnies. The family lives happily but are not well off, often having to “borrow” cabbages from Peter or scrounge from Mr. McGregor’s rubbish bin. On one particular day, Flopsy stays at home while her husband and children go to do the latter. The children fall asleep after eating some overgrown lettuces, and are regrettably found and put in a sack by Mister MacGregor. Flopsy arrives and becomes distraught, but the children are saved with the help of Thomasina Tittlemouse. Benjamin and Flopsy stuff the sack with rubbish, and later gift Thomasina with a quantity of rabbit wool.
